The prayers of hundreds of visually-challenged students in Delhi University have finally been answered. The university is all set to launch a multi-purpose resource centre which would not only have a huge collection of study material in Braille format, but also special studios to convert audio cassettes into text messages in Braille.
The centre will be opened in the Central Reference Library, which will work as an extension to Braille Library which so far had limited reach.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has provided Rs.10 lakh for development of the centre to be inaugurated on Tuesday. The centre would primarily focus on three activities — Braille production, talking book production and electronic text preparation—to facilitate the learning process for over 400 visually-challenged students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and also for sizeable number of faculty members with serious vision-impairment.
“The computer with special software will translate textbooks written in regional languages into Braille format. We would also have the facility for getting the print of the translated reading material with the aid of a Braille printer and copies will be forwarded to visually-challenged students,” said S Majumdar, DU librarian.
In its technologically advanced recording studios, audio-cassettes containing reading and reference material will be converted into text format, which after thorough editing by experts will be transformed into Braille format.
“Both students and faculty members will decide about the types of reference material they would like to refer to, before the audio-cassettes will get transformed to text messages and later in Braille,” said Majumdar.
However, facilities will also be available to convert the text material into audio form with the aid of a talking software. “A lesson is best absorbed if it’s read to a student. The talking software will help the visually-challenged students to learn fast,” said Majumdar. Besides making the learning process easier for the visually-impaired, the university is also planning to make a barrier-free environment
