CAT : Admission Process

Admission Process

This box provides information about frequently asked questions and queries about the admission process followed by IIMs for their post-graduate programmes subsequent to CAT . It is therefore, important for the candidates to read this box carefully.

1. Common Admission Test conducted by IIMs is an important input in the admission process and round of admission process which is based on group discussions and personal interviews. The candidates should note that it is important for them to perform well relative to other candidates in each of the three sections of the test as the scores of each section and the overall score are used to short list the candidates for the second round and may also be used for final ranking as well. In addition to the performance in CAT, IIMs may use academic performence, relevant work experience and other similar inputs for ranking and short listing the candidates for group discussions and personal interviews.

2. Please note that each IIM short lists
the candidates for Group Discussions and Personal
Interviews independent of other IIMsence it is possible to observe variations in the list of candidates short listed by different IIMs. For more details, candidates are advised to read carefully the admission process related information of each IIM, as given in section 4 of the CAT bulletin and on the web-sites of respective IIMs.

3. Each IIM will upload the list of short-listed candidates in its website on January 2, 2007. A candidate may view the dates and venue of the group discussion and Interview (GD&PI) schedule. Subsequently, a formal letter would be sent to all short listed candidates. GD&PI are conducted by each IIM separately and hence it is possible that a candidate may be asked by two or more IIMs to attend GD&PI on the same date and time. In such a case, a candidate may write to all the IIMs (except the one whose GD&PI a candidate would like to attend on the scheduled date) to reschedule the interview date/time, he/she plans to attend. Similar requests can also be made in case of other emergencies. However, it is the discretion of the IIM concerned, to accept such a request

4. After the GD&PI round, the offers are made by IIMs to successful candidates. The basis of ranking and finally selecting the successful candidates is based on a diverse set of attributes and may include performance in CAT, performance in GD&PI, academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular achievements, work experience etc. The weights given to each of these attributes may vary across IIMs as the admission process of each IIM subject to CAT is independent.

5. The disclosure of information about the admission process at IIMs is driven by three concerns which at times conflict with each other. On one hand, the IIMs would like the admission process to be transparent. On the other, however, IIMs wish to protect privacy of individual candidates and confidentiality of the process to prevent abuse. Based on these considerations, the performance of an individual is not made available to any other candidates. Similarly, the performance of candidates in GD&PI including assessment of attributes mentioned under paragraph 4 of this box and the weights of attributes used in the selection process are not disclosed to anyone to prevent exercise of undue pressure on the panelist participating in the admission/selection process. To ensure that the resultant lack of transparency does not in any way affect the candidates negatively, adequate care is taken in formation of panel, development of objective criteria for assessment, random allocation of candidates to a panel and other such measures.

6. The candidates who appeared in GD&PI of an IIM would be able to view whether they have been offered admission by visiting the web-site of the IIM on April 12, 2007. Subsequently, a formal letter would be sent to all successful candidates. The candidates who are offered admission need to confirm their acceptance by completing all the required formalities by April 30, 2007. Some of the students who appeared in GD&PI of an IIM may also be placed on waiting list initially on April 12, 2007. The offers to candidates on the wait list would depend upon the number of successful candidates accepting the made by an IIM.
