Pattern of Examination
GATE entrance examination is single paper of 3 hours duration and of 150 marks. The question paper is in English only. Before applying for GATE entrance examination, a candidates must assure that he/she has chosen the right optional subject, which enables him/her to become eligible to seek admission to the programme of interest. The criteria for postgraduate admission with scholarship/assistantship are different in various Institutes. GATE Offices are not in a position to provide any information in this regard.
The choice of the paper is the responsibility of the candidate.

Introduction
GATE - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an All-India Examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT’s). This test is conducted on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. GATE is a passport for admission into ME and MTech courses in almost all the colleges / institutes / universities of the country. ME / MTech is a three semester programme and admission to these programmes largely depends upon GATE percentile score.

The CET Cell generally comes to know about the exact number of seats, their classification and categories before the commencement of seat selection. Hence, an accurate number of seats to be offered for allotment as Government seats, college wise, category wise and course wise, cannot be made known exactly. The seat matrix (Government seats) in respect of Engineering, Technology and Architecture courses, as notified by the Government are published on the notice boards of the CET Cell and also on the CET website http://kar.nic.in/cet before the commencement of seat selection process. You may apply online by visiting concern institute’s website.
You could also obtain the brochure and application form from the GATE offices of the zone in which you select your test centre on payment of the prescribed amount by demand draft drawn in favour of the concerned institute.
You could also obtain the brochure and application form by post, by sending a request to the Chairman, GATE, at any of the IITs and IISc.
Your request must be accompanied by two self-addressed slips and a demand draft of the specified amount drawn in favour of the concerned Institute.

Examination Pattern
Selection is on merit in CPMT in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology carrying 300 marks in each paper and is of 2-1/2 hours duration each. The questions are of objective type and the standard is of Intermediate. There's an additional paper of Hindi. However, marks secured in this paper are not added in Merit List. Candidates are required to obtain 50% (40% for SC/ST) marks in Science subject and 35% marks in Hindi/English to qualify the Test.

Eligibility for Appearing in GATE
Eligibility criteria for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering are -
Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy or those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
Master's degree holders in any branch of Science / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master's degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master's degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.

M.Sc. Biotechnology
A Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Science / Agriculture / Pharmacy / Veterinary / Engineering / Medicine ( MBBS )
M.Sc. Chemistry
Bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as a subject for three years / six semesters and Mathematics at (10+2) level.
M.Sc. Applied Geology / M.Sc. Geological Sciences / M. Tech. Applied Geology
Bachelor’s degree with Geology as a subject for three years / six semesters and any two of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biological Science as subjects. The candidate must have Mathematics at (10+2) level.
M.Sc. Geophysics
Bachelors degree
Stipend
Candidates who have passed Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination will be eligible to get a stipend up to Rs.2,500/- per men sum from University Grants Commission (UGC) depending on the performance in M.E./ M.Tech. Examination.
