In 1823, the French Government established the “Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery”. In 13th July 1964, the Government of India renamed it as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). The institute is headed by Director as its Chief Executive. The Medical Superintendent of the hospital coordinates the entire gamut of activities related to patient care. The Dean helps Director in coordination of all academic activities of the institute including teaching and research.

Nationality: An applicant for admission to Postgraduate Degree / Post graduate Diploma courses should be a RESIDENT INDIAN NATIONAL.
Educational Qualification: Candidates should have passed MBBS Degree of any University recognised by the Pondicherry University and the Medical Council of India and should have obtained permanent registration. Those candidates who have completed / will be completing the Internship on or before 31st March, of the year of entrance examination only can apply.

JIPMER traces its origin to 1823 when a medical school called Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery was established by French government. In November 1956 the Government of India took over the medical college in the wake of the ‘de facto’ transfer of Pondicherry. The college was upgraded as a Regional Centre and named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on 13th July 1964. JIPMER campus is located in the western entrance of Pondicherry on the highway and spread over 195 acres of sloping land that is a hillock, known in vernacular as ‘Gorimedu’.

Common Entrance Test for Pondicherry Private Medical Colleges (CETPPMC) is an entrance examination for admission to MBBS course in Private Medical Colleges in Pondicherry. The governing body of the examination is the Pondicherry Linguistic & Religious Minority Medical & Dental Colleges Welfare Association. Candidates can only appear once for CETPPMC though SC/ST candidates can appear twice for CETPPMC.

Application form along with the information bulletin can be obtained from the notified branches of Canara Bank in Pondicherry on cash payment of Rs. 250 (Rs. 50 for SC/ST candidates).
