NUJS is a premier University for legal studies and research. The university was set up in the year 1999 by the State Government with a view to promote excellence in legal education. NUJS provides for experience based learning under multi-disciplinary curriculum and imparts clinical method of teaching. The University offers a five year integrated B.A./BSc. LLB (Hons.) degree program at the undergraduate level and a Master of Laws (L.L.M.) programme at the postgraduate level. Admission to the former program is through the Common Law Admission Test, a highly competitive, nationwide common entrance examination, held jointly by the seven national law schools. NUJS also offers M.Phil. and Ph.D degrees.

The Candidate shell have passed 12th standard with 50% marks in aggregate taking English and core subjects together and 35% marks in each subject. Those appearing for qualifying exam by April, 2007 may also apply. National Admission Test at major cities.

Application forms are to be sent to the Registrar of the University with Demand Draft/Pay Order of Rs. 850.00 favoring NUJS payable at Kolkata. Bank loans available for studying at NUJS. For economically challenged meritorious students NUJS offers some financial assistance.

University has sought to provide students with a wide array of opportunities to gain practical experience in the field. The Internship programme accordingly forms an integral part of education at NUJS. Students have to intern with law firms, Companies, Senior Advocates, NGOs etc. NUJS students have interned with the top law firms, companies and NGOs these includes: Amarchand Mangaldas, Anand & Anand, ARA Law, AZB & Partners, Baker Mckenzie (Hong Kong) etc.
NUJS 2010 College Infrastructure
Library – NUJS has a well-developed library with books and periodicals covering a variety of disciplines including law, social sciences and humanities. The library is also developing a computer section where students will be allowed access to the Internet. The different schools have their own libraries that contain collections in their respective specialized area of law. The University also has a Legal Services Clinic that is headed by retired District Judge functions in the University. It provides programmes for clinical education of students. It also offers a variety of legal services as well.
