Admissions to the following full time academic programmes are available at different IITs and made through Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. ( JAM ). The M.Sc. and M.Sc. – Ph.D. programmes are of 4 semesters, while Master of Computer Application and M. Tech. Programmes are of 6 semesters duration.

Eligibility

Eligibility for Courses

Eligibility for different courses offered at different IITs through JAM test is mentioned below.

M.Sc. Biotechnology

A Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Science / Agriculture / Pharmacy / Veterinary / Engineering / Medicine ( MBBS )

M.Sc. Chemistry

Bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as a subject for three years / six semesters and Mathematics at (10+2) level.

M.Sc. Applied Geology / M.Sc. Geological Sciences / M. Tech. Applied Geology

Bachelor’s degree with Geology as a subject for three years / six semesters and any two of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biological Science as subjects. The candidate must have Mathematics at (10+2) level.

M.Sc. Geophysics

Bachelors degree with any two of Physics, Mathematics and Geology for at least two years / four semesters and the third one for at least one year / two semesters.

M.Sc. Applied Geophysics / M.Tech. Applied Geophysics

Bachelor’s degree with Mathematics and Physics as
subjects and any one of the following subjects:
Chemistry, Geology, Statistics, Electronics, and Computer Science.

M.Sc. Mathematics / M.Sc. Applied Mathematics / M.Sc. Industrial Mathematics & Informatics

Bachelor’s degree with Mathematics as a subject for at least two years /f our semesters.

M.Sc. Physics / M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree Programme in Physics

Bachelor’s degree with Physics as a subject for three years / six semesters and Mathematics for at least two years / four semesters.

M.Sc. Applied Statistics & Informatics / M.Sc. Statistics & Informatics / M.Sc. Statistics / M.Sc. Mathematics & Computing

Bachelor’s degree with either Mathematics or Statistics as a subject for at least two years / four semesters.

Master of Computer Application ( MCA )

Bachelor’s degree with Mathematics as a subject for at least one year for annual system candidates / at least two papers of Mathematics for semester system candidates.

Eligibility for admission

JAM test qualified candidates shall have to fulfill the eligibility criteria of the respective IIT in which a candidate seeks admission, as mentioned below.

IIT Bombay / IIT Madras - A pass in Bachelor’s degree of at least three years duration.

IIT Delhi - First Division in Bachelors degree (5% relaxation for SC / ST / PH candidates)

IIT Guwahati - A first class or minimum 55% marks or CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale for General category candidates (50% marks or CGPA of 5.5 on a 10 point scale for SC / ST candidates) in the qualifying degree or equivalent.

IIT Kanpur - At least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent for General category candidates (50% marks or equivalent for SC / ST candidates) at the qualifying degree.

IIT Kharagpur - A pass in 10+2+3 degree or its equivalent.

IIT Roorkee - At least 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.75 on a 10-point scale for General category candidates (55% marks or 6.25 CGPA for SC / ST candidates) in the qualifying degree.

Candidates appearing in the final examination of the qualifying degree are also eligible to appear in JAM in a given year.

Reservation

Seat reservation is also available at different IITs for various M.Sc. and Post B.Sc. programmes offered on the basis of JAM test. Category wise seat reservation is mentioned below.

IIT-JAM : Test Pattern

Test Pattern

Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. ( JAM ) test paper is of three hours duration. Test Papers for Biotechnology and Master of Computer Application (MCA) is fully Objective Type with multiple choice questions only.

Test Papers for Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics and Physics is of Objective-cum-Subjective Type. Each of these Test Papers contain 30% Objective type questions and the remaining as Subjective type questions.

The Objective type questions in all the Test Papers contains four choices of which only one is correct.

There is negative marking for wrong answers to the Objective type questions in all the Test Papers with negative weightage of 1/3 (one third) of the marks assigned to correct answer.

Note:

a. Use of logarithmic tables, calculator of any kind, cellular phone / pager / electronic gadgets is NOT permitted during the Test.
b. All answers to the subjective type questions must be written in blue / black / blue-black ink only. Sketch pen, pencil or ink of any other colour should not be used.
c. The medium for all the Test Papers is English only.

IIT-JEE : Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria

Qualifying Examination:Candidates applying for IIT-JEE should have either completed or must be appearing in any one of the following examinations in the year of the IIT-JEE exam:-

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board.
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
  • Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • General Certificate Education ( GCE ) Examination ( London / Cambridge / Sri Lanka ) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University.
  • Any Public School / Board / University Examination in India or in any foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system.
  • H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
  • 3 or 4-year Diploma recognized by AICTE – All India Council for Technical for Technical Education or a State Board of Technical Education.

In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

Eligibility Criteria for Candidates appearing in qualifying examination

  1. The candidates belonging to general  category must secure a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Qualifying Examination. Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure a minimum of 55% in aggregate in the Qualifying Examination. If any Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of counselling.
  2. With effect from 2006, a candidate is allowed only two attempts to appear in JEE. Furthermore, he/she is allowed to write JEE only in the year in which he/she passes the qualifying examination and/or in the following year.
  3. Candidates, who join any of the IITs, IT-BHU Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad through JEE, will not be permitted to appear in JEE in future.

Exception: Candidates, who have passed their Qualifying Examination in 2005 or earlier, are permitted to appear in JEE-2006, as a last chance, irrespective of the marks secured in the Qualifying Examination, or the number of earlier attempts at JEE, subject to their satisfying age limit This exception is also applicable to those candidates who are currently registered in any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISM, Dhanbad.

Date of Birth: No minimum age is required to appear in IIT-JEE. Upper age limit is 25 years for general category candidates, which is relaxable upto 5 years in case of reserved category candidates.

Special Requirements for Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Courses: Candidates opting for Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery courses must be free from colour blindness.

Women Candidates for Mining Courses : Section 46 (1) of the Mines Act, 1952 states that “No woman shall, notwithstanding anything contained in any other law, be employed (a) in any part of a mine which is below ground, (b) in any mine above ground except between the hours 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.”. Women candidates are not admitted to Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering at ISM Dhanbad, whereas the corresponding programmes at IIT Kharagpur and IT-BHU, Varanasi have no such restriction.
