GMAT : Programs

Programs

Graduate Management Admission Test - GMAT is a standardized test, primarily intended to aid graduate schools of business for advanced study in Business and Management. The test is a required part of the admission process for most MBA programmes in the US, Canada and the rest of the world. It is intended to help the graduate schools of business assess the potential of applicants for advanced study in business and management.

Of the several thousand graduate management programmes worldwide, nearly 1,700 use the GMAT and more than 1,000 require it. In addition to that, there are several institutions within India, like the Indian School of Bu
iness- H
derabad (ISB), Great Lakes Institute of Management-Chennai, SP Jain- Mumbai & Dubai, NMIMS-Mumbai, and MICA-Ahmedabad, which consider the GMAT scores for entry.

The GMAT is developed and administered by the US-based “Educational Testing Service” (ETS) under the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. ETS sets the questions, conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. For the conduct of the test, ETS has appointed Testing Agencies in various countries, which act as franchisee for ETS. In India, this agency is the Prometric Testing (P) Ltd. which administers the test at 9 centres in the country.

GMAT : Test Pattern

Test Pattern

The Graduate Management Admission Test examination consists of three main parts, the Analytical Writing Assessment, Quantitative section, and Verbal section.

Analytical Writing Assessment

The GMAT exam begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The AWA consists of two separate writing tasks—Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument. Test takers are allowed 30 minutes to complete each essay.

Quantitative Section

Following an optional five-minute break, the Quantitative section of the GMAT test begins. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two question types—Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. Test takers are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

Verbal Section

After a second optional five-minute break, the Verbal Section of the GMAT test begins. This section contains 41 multiple-choice questions of three question types—Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. Test takers are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

The following table gives out the format of the GMAT

Test Section No. of Question Timings
Analytical Writing Assessment
Analysis of an Issue 1 Topic 30 Mins
Analysis of an Argument 1 Topic 30 Mins
Optional Rest Break 5 Mins
Quantitative Section 37 Questions 75 Mins
Problem Solving
Data Sufficiency
Optional Rest Break 5 Mins
Verbal Section 41 Questions 75 Mins
Reading Comprehension
Critical Reasoning
Sentence Correction

Analytical Writing Assessment

The analytical writing section requires you to write - or rather type - two short essays in thirty minutes each. The first is the Analysis of an Issue, in which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. The second essay is Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated.

For both the essays, the emphasis is on the “Analytical” part, and not on the “Writing” part. This implies that a concise essay with well-reasoned points written in simple English will be looked upon more favourably than an essay which falls short on the analytical aspects even though it is high on writing skills.

A five-minute break follows the two essays. The computer gives you the option to take this break, or to move directly to the subsequent section. Even if you finish the essays before the stipulated sixty minutes, the break will still be of five minutes. It is advisable to utilize this break by gearing yourself up for the tougher sections that follow.

GMAT : Eligibility

Eligibility

Anyone and everyone is eligible for taking the GMAT - there are no restrictions based on age or qualifications. The test scores are valid for five years, i.e., most universities accept scores up to five years old. But it is always better if your scores are recent (not older than 2 years).

GMAT : Tentative Dates

Tentative Dates

GMAT is now computer adaptive tests and can be taken all round the year. To schedule a date to take any of these tests, contact the Regional Registration Centre. CAT : Eligibility

Eligibility

For Post Graduate Programs in Management: For all IIMs, the minimum eligibility criterion for admission to PGP: The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST) or Persons with Disability (PWD) category], of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent. The basis
of computing the percentage obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be based on the practice followed by the university/ institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case of the candidates being awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the equivalence would be based on the equivalence certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained bachelor’s degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by the IIMs by dividing obtained CGPA with the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the resultant with 100.

Candidates appearing for the final bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification examination can also apply. Such candidates must produce a certificate from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar/Director of the university/ institution certifying that the candidate has obtained 50% marks or equivalent (45%in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD category) based on latest available grades/marks. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by June 30,2007 from the Principal/Registrar of their college/institute (issued on or before June 30, 2007) stating that they have completed all the requirements (the results may, however, be awaited) for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/ equivalent qualification on the date of issue of the certificate. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by the Principal/Registrar, with at least 50% marks (45% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD category). The deadline for submission of the mark sheet and the certificate is December 31,2007. Non-fulfilment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission. IIMs would not allow any candidate to join their programme in case the candidate is unable to complete all the requirements for a bachelor degree on or before June 30,2007. The IIMs would also not offer admission to any candidate after June 30, 2007.

Special eligibility requirements:

The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.

OR

The candidate must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in any non-Agriculture discipline, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST) or Persons with Disability (PWD) category] from a University or Institution as defined in the above paragraph and should have an interest in Agriculture, Agro/Food Processing, Rural and Alied sectors. The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.
Rules for conversion of CGPA, for computation of percentage scored and for the candidates appearing in the final year of qualifying examination would be same as mentioned above in the minimum eligibility criterion for admission to PGP for all IIMs. Please note that though the registration date for the PGP-ABM is June 1, 2007, students who are in the final year of their bachelor’s degree education and may have to go back to complete their examination formalities during June’ 2007 will be granted special leave for this purpose. The provisional admission of students who DO NOT complete ALL their examination formalities on or before June 30,2007 will be CANCELLED. Under no circumstances will an extension of this date of June 30.2007 be granted.

Also, please note that the candidates, who are eligible under eligibility criteria (1) by virtue of a Master’s degree in Agriculture Sciences or in Agriculture-related disciplines but do not have Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Sciences or in Agriculture-related disciplines, also need to fulfil the requirements of their Master’s degree by June 30,2007.
