F.A.Q. : F.A.Q. The following questions and answers pertain to candidates seeking admission to Physics/Theoretical Computer Science programmes. For any further queries regarding Physics. For any further queries regarding Theoretical Computer Science.
Q1. Is there any examination fee for appearing in JEST 2007? A1. There is no fee. However, if you apply off-line, you need to send a draft of Rs.60/- in the name of “JEST-2007, Bhubaneswar” to cover the expenses of postal correspondence.
Q2. Can I download the application form from any URL? Or can I use a Xerox copy of the printed application form? A2. No. You cannot download the application form. Xerox copy of the application is also not accepted. You have to apply on-line or request for a printed application form.
Q3. I have qualified in GATE / NET. Do I have to still appear in JEST? Can I not be called for interview based on my GATE score / NET qualification? A3. The GATE score or qualification in NET is used by some institutions for calling the applicants for interview. However, there is no uniform policy among all the Participating Institutions in this regard. For details you may visit the web sites of individual institutes. Even those institutions which use GATE score may fix a cut-off percentile for calling for interview and hence you may miss the interview call. It is recommended that you give yourself maximum opportunity for being considered for interview by appearing in JEST.
Q4. Is there a Minimum Percentage requirement (in the qualifying examination) to appear in JEST 2007 ? A4. There is no requirement of minimum percentage to appear in JEST 2007. However, a consistently good academic record is expected. Various participating institutes have different criteria for admissions in this regard. You are advised to visit the homepages of the concerned institutes. If this too is insufficient to clarify your doubts you need to contact the institutes you are interested in.
Q5. If I qualify in JEST, is admission to Ph.D. programme issured? A5. No. Mere qualifying in JEST does not entitle one to be called for interview, or to get admission, or for award of a Research Fellowship. Using the JEST results, each institute will call a limited number of candidates for its further selection procedure depending on its requirements. JEST is only a screening test.
Q6. Is the JEST Physics question paper common for candidates with M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. and B. Sc. ? A6. Yes.
Q7. What is the syllabus for JEST 2007 Physics paper? A7. The syllabus is the standard M.Sc. Physics syllabus. In particular, it presumes basic knowledge in courses such as Mathematical Physics, Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and some special subjects such as Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics, Nuclear Physics etc.
Q8. What type of questions are asked in JEST Physics paper? A8. Sample questions are provided in the links “Sample Questions”.
Q9. What is the syllabus for JEST 2007 Theoretical Computer Science paper and what type of questions are asked? A9. See under Sample Questions for Theoretical Computer Science.
