The M.S. University has strong base in Microbial Technology and the main features of the programme are Genetics, Molecular Biology, Industrial Microbiology and Immunology.
The basic training is given in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetic Engineering, Developmental Biology, Biochemical Engineering and some aspects of Biophysics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Plant Tissue Culture and Environmental Biology.
The major research programmes are in the following areas: Heterologous Gene Expression, Genome Analysis, Genetic Engineering for Disease Resistance, Proteome Analysis, Microbial Polysacchari, Bioprocess Development, DNA and diagnostics/ Enzyme Technology, Bt-toxin receptor studies, Macrophage-bacteria interactions, Molecular evolution, Microbial diversity, Protein osmolyte interactions.
Students work on a research project for the duration of their course as a part of the practical training. The aim is to provide them sufficient experience and proficiency in the methodology of biological research, to enable them to carry out independent research. Projects are assigned, as far as possible, according to the individual interests of students, and are carried out in the Universitys own laboratories or of other departments or institutions/industry. After submission of their dissertation, they undergo a viva voce, in which they have to defend their work.
Students are also required to give one seminar during their course and submit a project proposal, and a term paper.
