Panjab University, Chandigarh: (10 seats)
Students joining the programme are eligible for the award of MSc. degree in Biotechnology. Major courses taught are: Genetic Engineering, Microbial Biotechnology, Animal Cell and Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Immunology, Computer Applications and Bioinformatics, Biochemical and Biophysical Techniques, Biostatistics and Bio-maths, Bio-chemical Engineering and Fermentation, Environmental Biotechnology etc. Students are given industrial training in the biotechnological industries after the end of the first year. In the second year, they have to work on a small research project.
The major thrust areas for research:
i) Vie Medical Biotechnology. Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases using Molecular Biology, Monoclonal Antibodies and Pre-natal Diagnosis; use of Molecular Probes for the Detection of Human papilloma virus, p53, CYPs, GSTs, Telomerase and various Oncogenes, Recombinant Vaccines.
ii) Environmental Biotechnology: Use of Molecular Techniques for Genetic Risk Assessment and Biodegradation of waste products.
iii) Industrial Microbiology/Biotechnology: Isolation of Microbes of Industrial importance, Characterization of Enzymes and Gene Cloning, Development of Biosensors for detection of Pathogens and Pollutants, Construction of better expression vectors.
The Department of Biotechnology has close interaction with a number of neighboring institutes such as the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education Research, Chandigarh; Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh; The Central Scientific & Instrumentation Research Organization, Chandigarh and the industrial units. Every year a large number of students clear CSIR/NET exams. Students admitted to Panjab University do not get any scholarship.
