International Student Exchange Programmes from India B-Schools

Premier management institutes of India are attracting a big number of foreign students as International Student Exchange Programmes. Big corporates are sponsoring these students for management programmes. The lists of corporates are huge like Reliance Industries, Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch, Tata Group, Lehman Brothers and lot more. According to Management gurus these type of corporate sponsorship of student exchange programme is a sort of brand building exercise. It will help companies to pick the best brains.
According to Prof. Arvind Sahay, coordinator (Placements and international immersion), IIM-A,” Corporates sponsor these exchange programmes to encourage recipients to join them. Even Indian companies are now coming ahead with sponsorships, since they require students with substantial overseas exposure”.
“While we started POISE (programme for international student exchange) in 2003, it was only last year that we had two students going for it for the first time. Next year, we hope to see a further increase in the numbers given that three foreign universities have already shown interest in partnering with us,” says Father N Casimir Raj, SJ, director, XLRI.
XLRI, Jamshedpur is in the process of talks with Tata Steels for the same. This year 8 students have opted for the student exchange programme.
Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) is also going to start student exchange process in 2007. They are in the process of talk with many corporates for this.
Devi Singh, director, IIM, Lucknow (1IM-L), Said “Students are exposed to a new culture and global business environment, Apart from intellectual input, these tours sensitise students for a cross-cultural environment”. B-Schools are now realising that there is immense value for this kind of exchange programmes. The students also understand the value of this type of international exposure for final placement process.
