Admission for the Master of Public Health (Health services, development and research) programme-2008

Applications are invited for admission to the Master of public Health (Health Services, Development and Research) Program of the ICMR School of Public Health at National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai.

The program is an initiative from ICMR and ICMR Partnership for Schools of Public Health (IPSPH) in response to the need for qualitative and quantitative change in the practice of public health in India.

This initiative primarily aims to develop middle-level managers for public health. The program is an off-campus course of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram and the MPH degree awarded is recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI).

Duration and course organization: The MPH (Health services, development and research) is two-year residential program. The students will be offered core public health courses for duration of 15 months.

They will undergo one elective course for three months from a wide range of elective courses that will be offered by different partner institutes of IPSPH and will conduct a dissertation project for six-month period.

Number of Seats: In the course starting from January 2008, upto twenty students will be admitted for the MPH program. Preference will be given to candidates sponsored by the central/state/UT government and the Armed Forces.

Eligibility: Applicants having the following criteria will be eligible to apply for the course.

1. MBBS degree recognized by MCI

2. Working in public health, preferably in state or central service or in medical institutions, sponsored on deputation for two years on full-time basis.

3. Three years experience in public health related activities after MBBS.

4. Age below 40 years. May be relaxed by five years for applicants with desirable experience One page write up: All the applicants are requested to submit one page write-up on “Why I am interested in the MPH course” along with the duly filled-in application form.

Course Fee and Fellowships: There is no course fee for the candidates sponsored by the state/central government/Armed forces. For non-sponsored students/ students sponsored by non-governmental candidates (NGOs), the course fee is Rs. 100,000/-for two years. ICMR will offer some fellowships for the non-sponsored candidates qualifying an examination on all India basis.

Method of Selection: A selection committee will evaluate the prospective candidates on the basis of educational qualifications, professional experience relevant to public health, entrance examination (for candidates who are non-sponsored/ sponsored by NGOs), one page write-up submitted by them and interview. Reservation of seats will be as per Government of India norms being followed by SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram. The decision of the Director, SCTIMST shall be final.
