Courses Offered:

2. One year Diploma in Information Technology, Multi-media Production, Publication Design.

3. Two years Master’s Degree in Information Technology (M Sc IT).

Department of Atomic Energy

Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CBS)

Admission to 5-yr M.Sc. (Integrated) Programme – (Physics)

The University of Mumbai and Department of Atomic Energy have jointly set up a new autonomous Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences in Mumbai, that will offer at 5-year M.Sc. (Integrated) programme in basis sciences. UM-DAE CBS, Mumbai is embedded in a vibrant research environment, with some of the best teachers and scientists from the University and other major institutes in the city (TIFR, BARC, IIT Bombay) on this faculty. UM-DAE CBS will be a residential institution with suitable accommodation and boarding facilities. New building with modern amenities and state-of-the-art technical facilities are being built in a few years in the Kalina campus of University of Mumbai. Till then, the Centre will operate from a temporary location at Kalina campus. For the academic year 2007-08, UM-DAE CBS, Mumbai will admit students in Physics stream only. Other streams will be started in subsequent year.

UM-DAE CBS will have a modern, flexible and seamless curriculum that emphasis the interdisciplinary nature of science and promotes innovation and research. The curriculum for the first two semesters will include physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology; specialization will begin with the 3rd semester. The students admitted to CBS will receive the scholarship of Rs.3,000/- p.m. and a suitable book grant. Those performing exceedingly well in M.Sc. may have a chance to be absorbed in R&D units and autonomous research Institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy.

There will be 20 seats in the first year (in Physics stream only) with reservation as per Govt. norms. The admission will be very selective and students who are highly motivated to pursue higher education and research in science and its applications are encouraged to apply.

The academic session for the first batch of students will start in September 2007.

Eligibility for admission to UM-DAE CBS:

Qualification: 60% marks for general category and 55% for SC/ST category in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII (or equivalent) examination, from any recognized Board in India. Students who have passed the qualifying examination in 2007 or are appearing in 2007 are eligible to apply. Where only Letter grade is given by the Board, a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required. In the absence of such a certificate the decision of the UM-DAE CBS Admission Committee will be final.

Age Limit: Candidates born on or after 01 Oct. 1982 are eligible to apply, relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST candidates

Admission Procedure:

A National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) will be conducted at a number of centres in India Sunday 29 July 2007 under the supervision of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR), Mumbai.

The test will consist of five sections: 1) General (Compulsory), 2) Mathematics, 3) Physics, 4) Chemistry and 5) Biology. Of section (2-5), which will carry equal weightage of marks, any three will have to be selected. The questions will be of objective type designed to test comprehension and analytical ability of the candidates. Based on the NEST score a limited number of students will be called fro (KVPY) Fellows or those who have qualified in the Indian National Olympiad Examination (2007) organized by HBCSE (TIFT) in different subjects will be called for interview without going through NEST, provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria for admission and send their applications along with application fee at the same address as given below. Final selection for admission will be made only on the basis of performance in the interview.

For MBA & MCA Programmes Selection will be made based on the marks obtained in the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) conducted by the Anna University on behalf of Government of Tamil Nadu, following the Community-wise reservation as stipulated by the Government.

The Candidates from other states except SC/ST candidates will be considered under General Turn.

Therefore, the candidates (including other State candidates) who aspire for admission in the University of Madras, shall appear for Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) to be conducted on 26.05.2007. The details on the Entrance Examination has been published in the dailies on 08.04.2007

Those who are appearing for University Final year Examinations in April / May 2007, may also apply for TANCET 2007 and for admission to the MBA & MCA programme for the Foreign National / NRI having foreign passport and valid VISA, without Entrance Examination.

15% supernumerary seats are available for MBA Self-supportive for sponsored candidates. The sponsored candidates also must appear for TANCET. Candidate for self-supportive MBA programme should not undertake employment during the course.

Date of Entrance Examination For M.Phil & P.G. Programmes:

Those who appearing for University final year examinations in April / May 2007 may also apply for all the programmes. The Entrance Examination will be held from 1st June 2007 onwards. The Heads of the Departments concerned will issue Hall-tickets indication the place, date and time for Entrance Examination. Such of those candidates who have not received Hall tickets in time due to Postal delay etc. have to contract the Head of the department concerned for getting necessary permission to take Entrance Examination.

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to M.A. degree course in Bharathanatyam under Private Study in the Department of Indian Music, University of Madras for the year 2007-2008.

Eligibility Condition: “No student shall be eligible for admission to a Master’s degree programs in any of the faculties unless he/she has successfully completed three years of an undergraduate degree or earned prescribed number of credits for an undergraduate degree, through the examinations conducted by a University/autonomous institution or possesses such qualifications as recognized by the concerned University as equivalent to an undergraduate degree”.

A candidate should have completed 30 years of age as on 30m September in the year in which the application is submitted.

Eligibility for award of Degree: A candidate should complete the course within 5 years from the academic year in which he/she registers for the course. Examinations will be conducted once in a year during the month of April to facilitate the foreign candidates to visit India for the examinations. The minimum period of attendance is 30 days in an academic year.

Issue of Application: Application can be had in person at the Information Centre (Enquiry Office), University of Madras, Chennai - 5 on submissions of a written requisition and payment of Rs.200/- by means of demand draft in favour of the Registrar, University of Madras, Chennai. Those who want to obtain application by post have to send a written requisition with a demand draft for a sum of Rs.250/- (Rs.200/- towards cost of application and Rs.50/-towards postage) in favour of the Registrar, University of Madras, Chennai.

However, the cost of application for Rs.200/- by means of demand draft shall be enclosed, failing which the application will be summarily rejected.

Last date for issue and submission of filled-in Application: 28.09.2007

A Graduate in any discipline with 10 years of performance or 10 years of teaching or 10 years of teaching and performance prior or after the Bachelors degree or Diploma in Dance or any other Diploma as equivalent thereto and those who have completed 30 years of age as on 30.09.06 is eligible to apply for the course.

The last date for receipt of application from the existing Colleges for Further Affiliation / Educational Agencies for starting new Arts and Science Colleges / Professional Colleges (i.e. Management Institutions - MBA / MCA courses alone) / Education Colleges for the academic year 2008-2009 will be 31st October 2007 and the cut off date for receipt of late applications (i.e. received beyond the statutory date of 31st October 2007) will be 10th December 2007, provided a penal fee of Rs.15,000/- per course will be collected for starting additional course(s) and penal fee of Rs. 30,000/- per College / Institution will be collected for starting fresh private colleges / institutions. Applications received beyond 10th December 2007 will be summarily rejected without intimation.

The last date for receipt of Applications from the existing Colleges for starting of additional section(s) / increase in intake in the existing course(s) for the academic year 2008 - 2009 will be 31st October 2007.
