(i) Scholarships to Pursue Higher Studies in India and Abroad. The foundation whose aim is to help those Indians with a demonstrated ability in their particular discipline and to give them an opportunity to emerge as a globally recognised leaders.

Courses: There are no restrictions on subjects. Scholarships are not given for Management Studies, Medicine or any other course which leads to the enhancement of commercial value of the applicant. Funds is given as an encouragement to research, programmes degrees, and courses that improve the candidate’s capacity to contribute positively to the community, environment and the realm of ideas.

(ii) Scholarships is awarded for Higher Studies. Subjects: Humanities, Basic Sciences, Fine Arts, Applied Arts and Performing Arts, Communications, Special Education 7 Law. This is an indicative list.

Universities/Institutions: All top ranked Universities of the world, including, Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, Royal College of Art in the U.K.. and Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Tufts, Brown, Stanford, Berkeley in U.S.

Eligibility: Candidates should have obtained admission to the university or Institution of their choice prior to submission of application forms. The Committee will consider only those candidates for interviews and the decision of the Board of Governors will be final. Specific Projects Proposed by the Candidate: Research, to be carried out in India and abroad either independently, or at a leaking institution. Candidates are expected to provide full details of proposed programmes, costs, evidence of affiliation/admission to such institutions. Preference is given to projects/research that explore new areas of knowledge.

Tenure of scholarship: The maximum benefit to a candidate going overseas will not exceed Rs. 15 lakhs per year. Scholarships may be given in full or in part.

Selection Procedure: The selection is made by an independent Selection committee on the basis of written applications followed by personal interviews. Last date: No time bar.

Postgraduate: 1st class degree. Last date: February for Indian Universities and June for Overseas.

Professional/Undergraduate: 75% marks for Undergraduates in the last exam or a good academic record. Last Date: June

Age: Scholarships are open to all Indian citizens of either sex and are resident in India at the time of application. They must be below 30 years of age (45 years for research/ creative projects) at the time of application. Preference is given to candidates who have not yet studied abroad. The foundation also encourages applications from young people who are currently employed. They are also advised not to submit their application unless all requirements have been fulfilled.

Overseas Scholarships is not awarded to candidates whose proposed course of study or specific project require field work trips to India during their tenure. The final interviews take place in June/July. All applicants must be available for interviews in India at their own cost.

Selection is made on the basis of a Written Test and an Interview to assess the aptitude of the candidate for Research. Study fields: Theoretical High Energy and Particle Physics; Nuclear Physics; Plasma Physics and Gravitational Physics; Nonlinear Dynamics and Computational Physics; Laser Physics and Quantum Optics; Atomic and Molecular Physics. Value: Rs.2800 p.m. The scholarship may be raised to Rs.3000 p.m. after two years and to Rs.3200 p.m. after four years subject to appropriate evaluation. A book allowance of Rs.3000 p.a. for each of the four years starting from the first year of Research Scholarship is provided. Selected candidates are provided accommodation in students hostel.

B. Associateship Programme: M.Sc. students with First Class or high second class degree in Physics/Chemistry/Applied Mathematics/ Geology/Geophysics/Oceanography and with Physics and Mathematics as subjects in their B.Sc. degree are selected in this programme to do research in association with Senior Scientists in specific experimental programme and participate in the associated theoretical/modelling activities.

Selection: The candidates are selected on the basis of their academic record, written test and personal interview. They are required to develop appropriate experimental skills and theoretical modelling capabilities as required.

The Associateship is awarded initially for one year, but may be continued for three years depending on the progress made by the individual. A few of the selected Project Associates who do exceptionally well are considered for suitable permanent positions in the Laboratory any time during their tenure and are allowed to develop their future scientific career.

Value: Rs.3500 p.m. Hostel facilities at a nominal rent or an HRA of Rs.650 p.m. (in lieu of non-availability of hostel accommodation) may be provided during the Associateship period.

The Nehru Trust for Cambridge University and the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, in collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, offers up to ten scholarships annually (eight Cambridge Nehru Scholarships and two Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Cambridge Scholarships) to enable graduates from India to pursue a course of research leading to the degree of Ph.D at the University of Cambridge.

Eligibility: Citizen of India normally under the age of 28 (on 1st October of the year of award) who have a first class honours degree or its equivalent are eligible to apply. Those who have in addition a first class Master’s degree or its equivalent may be given preference. Applicants must be successful in winning an ORS award which pays the difference between the home and overseas rate of the University Composition Fee. ORS application forms are sent to eligible candidates in due course.

The scholarships, tenable for up to three years, will cover the University Composition Fee at the home rate, approved College fees, a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student and a contribution towards a return air fare by the cheapest available route.
