ORGANIZARION-ADMINISTERED CIDA PROGRAMS

The CIDA-SICI Project (CSP): The CIDA-SICI Project aims at fostering sustainable development and strengthening relations between India and Canada. The CSP, begun in 1992 with funds from CIDA, is administered by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI). SICI promotes the study and understanding of Canada in India and India in Canada. Within the CSP, the Development Studies Program comprises Women & Development Awards for Indians, Social Sciences & Humanities Fellowships, and Visiting Scholar programs.

(a) Women and Development Awards: Up to three fellowships per year are offered to Indian scholars. Research fellowships (for faculty, post-doctoral and doctoral students; between four and eight months, Pilot Project Awards (up to two months), and Visiting Lectureships( three weeks are available.

Value: Research and Pilot Project Awards have a value of up to $2,700 per month, depending on the award. Return airfare and an additional $500 to cover the cost of books and personal effects are also paid. In the case of Visiting Lectureships, local travel and living expenses are included in lieu of the lump sum of $500.

(b) Social Sciences & Humanities Fellowships: Three fellowships are usually awarded each year to Indian scholar in the above fields to undertake research and related activities in Canada for four months. The recipients are expected to help strengthen research expertise on development issues at Canadian universities.

Value: The award consists of $ 1,500 per month and an accommodation allowance of up to $ 1, 200 for up to four months, as well as a return ticket to Canada and a lump sum payment of $500.

(c) Visiting Scholar Program: The Shastri Visiting Scholar Program is a joint arrangement between SICI and India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) allowing for subsidized exchanges for scholars.

Value: The program provides limited travel and living subsidies to Indian scholars visiting Canada.

Application Procedure: Applications must be made through the University Grants Commission in India.

Scholarships

Financial Aid: At the undergraduate and college level there is very little financial assistance/ scholarships available. Check with the individual educational institution you are applying to.
At the graduate level some scholarships are available with the individual universities, based on the students academic achievement.

For the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan you may apply to the External Scholarship Division, Dept. of Education, Ministry of HRD, Government of India, Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi 110001. Postgraduate students may be eligible for research or technical assistant’s positions within their faculty.

Assistantships: Students at the graduate level may qualify for assistantships (assisting professors in teaching and research) based on their academic abilities. Applications for this type of assistance are made through the university’s financial aid office. Your local Canadian Education Center also carries information on scholarships.

Generally scholarships are not awarded by colleges but financial aid is provided in the form of graduate scholarships, bursaries, fellowships, grants, assistantships and teaching assistantship. Scholarships are not provided by the Canadian Universities to foreign students pursuing undergraduate study. While the number of applicants for scholarships is quite large, assistanships are offered only to the graduate level students according to their academic merit. Assistantships (teaching & research) are helpful in meeting your financial needs to limited extent and do not cover the entire expenses on study. If you are keen on obtaining financial aid you must start enquiring quite well in advance, say about a year, whether the institutions you intend to join do have such provisions or not. The process of granting scholarships and awards usually precede the last dates fixed for making university applications .You can ascertain details of financial aid from these institutions.

International Students/Graduates between the age of 18 to 30 years who are registered with a post-secondary institution are allowed to combine employment with time for leisure and exploring their host country for a period of 3 months to one year under the Student Work Abroad Programme (SWAP).

During the vacation period young peopole between 18-30 years of age are offered an opportuonity to work in Canada for a period not exceeding six months, under the Working Holiday Programme.

Some of the institutions providing financial aid are as under:

Canadian International Development Agency: You have to apply to through the Ministry of Education in your own country to obtain scholarships administered by CIDA namely,

(1) Bilateral Student and Trainee Programmes for students from the developing countries are eligible.

(2) Multilateral Programmes including those tenable in Canada.

(3) United Nations Fellowship Programme, which are available only to specific group of people or discipline.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships: These are open to students from countries where Rotary Foundations exist. The applicants must have completed a minimum of two years University level course. Further details can be had from

Research Trainee Programmes Fellowships: These fellowships are open to the international students who have a profession degree in one of the field like nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, rehabilitative science, a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent. It is not ne essary for the applicants to register in a graduate degreeo programme.
