TOEFL is just fine with Oz
COME JULY 2007, TOEFL — the English language proficiency test — will open doors for Indian students in Australia too. At present, students who are seeking admission to colleges and universities in Australia and the US simultaneously have to appear for two different English language proficiency tests — IELST and TOEFL. A change in Australian immigration law will allow international students to use TOEFL scores for admission to institutions down under. This would spare students the hassle of appearing for two separate and different tests.
The Australian immigration policy made English language proficiency test mandatory in 2000 for certain non-English speaking countries. It made International English Language Testing System (IELTS) the standard exam to test English language proficiency. IELTS is managed by British Counril-University of Cambridge-IDP Australia. Negotiations by the Princeton-based ETS has meant that from July 2007, international students who require to take an English language proficiency test, will have the option of IELTS and TOEFL.
GenaNetten, TOEFL marketing manager, ETS said: “We have been in discussion with the Australian immigration department. As a matter of fact, the state department has also been involved in these talks. The idea is that in the interest of fair trade, they (Australians) should accept the TOEFL.”
Nearly 27,000 Indian students chose Australia as their destination in 2005. Making TOEFL an option as a language proficiency test will mean that students don’t have to foreclose options. The number of TOEFL test takers has been on the rise in India, from 37,500 in 2004 to 60,000 in 2005. It is projected to reach the’61,000 mark this year. Greater acceptability .of. TOEFL could see a surge in the number of test takers in India.
